Boom barrier installation: site survey checklist

Prepare a boom barrier brief covering lane dimensions, traffic, access credentials, safety devices, power, foundations and acceptance tests before selecting a model.

A boom barrier installation starts with the lane and its use. Arm length is only one part of the decision. A useful survey records vehicle movement, available space, the access-control workflow and the work needed to put the system into service.

Describe the lane and traffic

Provide the clear lane width, intended entry and exit direction and the types of vehicles using it. Note overhead obstructions, nearby pedestrian movement and the space available for a waiting vehicle. Record busy-period traffic and whether a guard controls movement. A site survey should establish the appropriate equipment and layout rather than relying on a photograph alone.

Choose how an opening is authorised

List the intended operating method: a guard’s switch, remote control or a separately specified credential or recognition system. RFID, number-plate recognition and other integrations require compatible components and an agreed control sequence. They should not be inferred from a barrier’s model name. Define visitor entry, rejected credentials and manual operation with the responsible site team.

Specify detection and safety arrangements

Have the installer assess vehicle detection, obstacle protection, pedestrian separation and the operating environment for the proposed equipment. A photocell, loop detector or other accessory serves a defined purpose and must be selected and positioned for the installation. The complete safety design and commissioning checks need competent site assessment; a generic product list cannot establish that a lane is safe.

Separate equipment from site preparation

  • Barrier unit, compatible arm and any required support accessories.
  • Detection, control and access accessories in the agreed design.
  • Power, communication cabling, cable protection and earthing scope.
  • Foundation, mounting and any civil-work responsibilities.
  • Network or software components, if part of the selected workflow.
  • Training, testing, documentation and maintenance arrangements.

Ask the quotation to identify who completes each item, including any work the customer must arrange before installation. Confirm current availability and model suitability through the product catalogue and a site-specific recommendation.

Agree the power-failure procedure

The response to loss of power depends on the chosen barrier and installation. Ask for the authorised manual release procedure and any specified backup arrangement to be explained during handover. Define who can operate it and how the lane is managed while service is unavailable. Do not assume every model lifts automatically or provides the same backup runtime.

Learn from an actual installation

Our Royal Hatcheries installation story documents an eSSL BG-100R with a 6-metre arm, photocell sensor, manual operation switch and wireless remote. That is the recorded configuration for that project; another site’s lane, traffic and safety requirements may need a different arrangement.

Prepare acceptance checks before commissioning

Agree tests for normal entry, denied entry where applicable, detection, the specified safety functions, manual operation and recovery after an interruption. Record the installed components, results, open actions and the trained customer contact. Maintenance and response terms should be written into the service agreement.
